Being a science graduate, we would have plenty of opportunities showered upon us to excel in doctoral studies and research work. But unfortunately, many of us are oblivious of the scope of scientific research and development in our country. This article is all that science graduates need to know about CSIR NET Exams.

Council of Scientific and Industrial Research(CSIR) is a premier national R&D organization and the world’s largest publicly funded R&D organization. CSIR National Eligibility Test(NET) is a national level entrance examination that is conducted exclusively for science graduates who are in the following streams,

  • Chemical Sciences
  • Earth, Atmospheric, Ocean, & planetary sciences
  • Life Sciences
  • Mathematical Sciences
  • Physical Sciences

CSIR NET exams are conducted for two certifications namely CSIR NET LS( lectureship) and CSIR NET JRF(Junior Research Fellowship). Applications are invited for these exams twice a year during June and December. Qualifying NET LS examinations will provide us teaching positions in Indian colleges, government-funded colleges, and universities. The scorecard of this exam is valid for lifetime. Qualifying CSIR NET JRF will enable us to go for doctoral and post-doctoral degrees. Many of them can be recruited for the research fellow positions in IIT’s, Post-graduate colleges, Government research establishments(including CSIR), development establishments of recognized public or private sector industrial firms and other reputed universities. The scorecard is valid for 2 years in this exam and is not extendable.


Educational qualification: The candidates with M.Sc., Integrated BS-MS, BS-4 Years, BE/B-Tech, B-Pharma, B.Sc.(Hons), MBBS, Or an Equivalent Degree with 55% for General and OBC candidates, and 50% for ST/SC/PWD Candidates are eligible. Students enrolled in integrated MS-PhD program are also eligible to apply. Candidates enrolled for M.Sc. or having completed 10+2+3 years of the above qualifying examination are eligible to apply under the Result Awaited(RA) category. Candidates with only bachelor’s degree can only apply for NET JRF and not for NET LS.

Nationality: Only Indians

Age limit: For JRF, the maximum age limit is 28 years which is relaxed 5 years in the case of candidates belonging to SC, ST, OBC, physically handicapped, visually challenged and female applicants. For LS there is no upper age limit.
