What is Email Spam?
Email spam, also known as junk email, is the unrequested bulk messages sent through email. It was popularised in the 1990s and this email spam has been the most common problem faced by almost all the people. The email address of the people is obtained by spambots. A spambot is a program designed to collect e-mail addresses from the Internet to build mailing lists for sending spam. A spambot can gather e-mail addresses from Web sites, newsgroups, special-interest group postings, and chat-room conversations. Spammers use spambots to create email distribution lists that contain a group of email IDs as a single ID. A spammer typically emails to millions of email addresses, expecting a few people will respond or interact with the message.
Why Email Spam?
Email spam has various reasons, and one of the most common reasons is to promote business since emails are a way to get in touch directly with the customer. Digital Marketing has a separate field called Email Marketing in which people send emails to promote content, events and to direct people towards the business website. It is used for promoting online degrees, job opportunities and online gambling. They are also used illegitimately to conduct email fraud, which are emails disguised as the official communication from banks, online payment processors or any other organizations a user may trust. It is always better to avoid opening spam emails and never respond to them or click on links in such messages.
How to Stop Email Spam?
Spam mails cannot be completely stopped but you can reduce the amount that makes it into your Inbox. There is a spam filter, which will move the suspicious email to a separate junk folder. You can also report, block and delete spam email that makes it into your inboxes which will prevent further messages from those spam addresses or messages displaying similar content. For extra protection, you can also use a third-party antispam filter or create an email whitelist, which includes all the specific email addresses, IP addresses or domains the user trusts and willing to receive email from.
