The arena of social science is still relatively undiscovered, its career potential grossly untapped. Only a few have been able to define their careers and positions in social science, achieving breakthroughs unparallelled to anybody else.

Dr. Irfan Habib is one of the few who have been able to express through his works and his teachings as to what history actually is. Following the Marxist historiographical style, his books are able to find wide popularity among scholars and students alike. Irfan was the son of renowned historian Mohammad Habib, who was also a member of the CPI(M). After Dr. Habib returned from Oxford he started teaching history at the Aligarh Muslim University and is presently appointed Professor Emeritus at the Department of History at Aligarh.

Habib is a master in the economic history of medieval India. Also, his study of the Vedas and the brahminical culture is something really worthwhile. Some of his most appealing books are a The Agrarian System of Mughal India, A People’s History of India, The National Movement: Studies and Ideologies in History and so on. Furthermore, he received numerous honorary awards starting with the Jawaharlal Nehru Fellowships( 1968), Watumull Prize of the American Historical Association( 1982), the Padma Bhushan(2005), etc.

Thus, Irfan Habib has been able to show us a unique way of history writing along with different kinds of approaches to the subject itself. His personality, knowledge, and guidance regarding History or rather social science itself are to inspire and assist many future historians in their path of success, channelizing people’s views towards a particular direction, encouraging historians to think every day.
