Ever stood in the Starbucks queue and wondered what is the difference between a cappuccino and an americano? It can be confusing sometimes with the various terms going around. However, it’s never too late to know right!

Espresso: It is the foundation of every espresso-based drink, which is used in almost every coffee. Espresso is only coffee beans. It is brewed by shooting water under pressure through finely-ground coffee beans. Seemingly simple, it is extremely difficult, to master this craft. It is the purest forms of coffee one can get.

Cappuccino: This Italian coffee is traditionally made using espresso, and hot milk, and is topped with foamed milk. One of the most popular types of coffee, it is generally preferred during breakfast, and can further be topped with powder or chocolate shavings.

Americano: The Americano is a very simple type of coffee, believed to be had by American soldiers during World War II. It is made by infusing a shot of espresso with hot water, instead of milk. As a result, it gives the consistency of drip coffee, but, a different taste.

Latte: Another very popular coffee, it essentially has the same contents as that of a cappuccino, but, in different proportions, which give it a completely different taste and texture. It consists of one-third espresso, two-thirds milk, and about a centimetre of frothed milk layer on top. It contains relatively more milk than a cappuccino.

Iced Coffee: My personal favourite and the only “cold” coffee included in this list. To make an iced coffee all you need is coffee ice cubes and milk. This beverage if made perfect can be very refreshing and flavourful. The coffee and sweetener (as needed) are frozen into cubes, and then milk is poured over the cubes. Once the coffee cubes melt into the milk there you go.

Apart from these well-known types of coffee, there are several varieties of coffee, the discussion of which is beyond the scope of this article. However, if you love coffee and aren’t aware of them, you should check them out and give them a shot.
