A few years back, people would rarely choose Biotechnology as their Career option in India but now it’s so gladdening to find youngsters and students embracing this field for its vast applications in the industrial sector. The scope of Biotechnology in India is augmenting over years and the credit goes to all the incredibly inspiring bioentrepreneurs in India. One of the most endearing, courageous, and successful persons among them is Kiran Mazumdar-Shaw, the Chairman and Managing Director of Biocon Limited, Bangalore.

When she was young, she aspired to study medicine but unfortunately, she didn’t qualify the scholarship test. Her father being a Head Brewmaster at United Breweries, insisted her to study fermentation Science. Though she opted it, she felt it odd and discomforting as a girl to pursue her career in the brewing industry. But her father grew her up without perceiving any gender difference and asked her to banish such perspectives from her mind. He emphasized that brewing is the oldest Biotechnology known and one should look it as a Fermentation Science. She then went to Ballarat University, Australia to study Brewing and Malting. Although she was the only women studying the course, she excelled as a topper in the university and returned back to India self-assured and confident that she would succeed. But she found it difficult to obtain a job as people didn’t encourage women Brewmasters in India. To explore other Brewing opportunities, she went to Scotland and became an accomplished Master Brewer. Things turned apart magnificently when she was asked to establish an Indian Subsidiary of Biocon by the founder of Biocon Biochemicals Limited, Ireland. Initially, she faced many financial, technological, and credibility challenges but she audaciously transformed her small start-up to “the Health care hope of India”. Biocon is one of the leading Biopharmaceutical companies with cancer, diabetes, and various other autoimmune diseases as its major areas of research. She believes that her passion for affordable innovation and her interest in the “Business of Science” has seen Biocon commercialize many innovative platforms and products. Having achieved many awards, Kiran Mazumdar-Shaw is also an honourable recipient of Padma Shri and Padma Bhushan from the Government of Indian. She feels that an entrepreneur’s life is a continuous journey and is delightfully motivating us by exploring science to aid health care and biopharmaceutical growth in India.

“Entrepreneurship is about being able to face failure, manage failure and succeed after failure”Kiran Mazumdar-Shaw
